This mural design continues my series of site-specific artworks for Tauranga Crossing mall. A digital artwork that brings life and colour to the shop hoardings with a printed vinyl mural which celebrates Aotearoa’s native flora and fauna. Covering over 100sqm of space, this illustration piece is part of the same body of work as the Playpark playground mural I painted for Tauranga Crossing.
Inspired by the native bush of the Kaimai Ranges that surrounds the site of the shopping mall, this vinyl wall art is filled with layered forms, organic linework, and bold botanical silhouettes. You can spot local species like kōwhai, tānekaha, māpou, and clematis (puawananga), along with a few feathered friends such as the tūī and pīwakawaka.
The colour palette is full of earthy, calming tones designed to keep things warm and inviting. The design is playful and layered, with subtle abstract textures pulled straight from my mark-making process in my home studio practice.
This printed mural creates harmony between the built and natural worlds, grounding the mall in its unique landscape here in Tauranga. It also includes small storytelling moments, giving visitors a chance to connect and learn about some of the native species featured.
It’s been such a joy to continue my collaboration with Tauranga Crossing. This piece brings art, storytelling, and connection into one of the Bay of Plenty's busiest public spaces.
